If you’re a nonprofit organization, library, or community group offering BizKids programs to the general public, you’ve likely faced a frustrating challenge: students register, but then they don’t show up. Or they attend once or twice and then disappear.<\/p>

It\u2019s not because your program isn\u2019t valuable. In fact, it\u2019s probably too<\/em> valuable\u2014and offered too generously.<\/em> The issue is a lack of perceived investment from families. But here\u2019s the good news: You can fix this without charging large fees or excluding vulnerable families.<\/p>

There are two principles that can dramatically reduce dropouts and no-shows:<\/p>

  2. Perceived Value & Exclusivity<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ol>

    1. Create a Sense of “Skin in the Game”<\/h3>

    When families feel they have something to lose, they show up. You can build this commitment in both financial and non-financial ways.<\/p>

    A. Charge a Small Fee or Deposit<\/strong><\/p>

      • Charge a small application or registration fee ($5\u2013$10) to filter out those who aren\u2019t serious.<\/p><\/li>

      • Offer a refundable deposit<\/strong> ($25\u2013$50) returned upon successful program completion and consistent attendance.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

        B. Require Action Before Program Start<\/strong><\/p>

          • Ask families to complete waiver forms (media and liability) by a deadline. If not completed, their seat is given away.<\/p><\/li>

          • Include short questions in the registration form for the child to answer: What do they hope to learn? What are they excited about?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

            C. Use Checkboxes to Reinforce Commitment<\/strong> Include clear statements parents must agree to:<\/p>

              • \u201cI commit to bringing my child to every class unless there is a family or health emergency.\u201d<\/p><\/li>

              • \u201cI understand that if required forms are not submitted by [date], my child\u2019s seat will be given away to a waitlisted student.\u201d<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

                These checkboxes aren\u2019t just logistical\u2014they help families take the commitment seriously.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

                2. Boost Perceived Value & FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)<\/h3>

                When something feels exclusive, limited, and highly valuable, people prioritize it. Here\u2019s how to use that psychology for good:<\/p>

                A. Build a Dedicated Program Information Page<\/strong><\/p>

                  • Don\u2019t just link a registration form\u2014create a web page that showcases the program.

                    B. Display Limited Seats on the Registration Form<\/strong><\/p>

                      • Cap initial registration numbers. If your registration form has the ability to show how many seats are left, reduce the number of seats you open up initially. For example, maybe you can hold 16 kids total, but to start, only open up 8 or 10 seats. That way it will start to show “only 2 seats left” to prospective parents and that seats may sell out soon. Then you can continue to open up more seats while still keeping the sense of urgency high.\u00a0<\/p><\/li>

                      • Always accept, and encourage, waitlisted registrations, as last-minute dropouts do happen.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>

                        C. Open Registration at Your Community Events<\/strong><\/p>

                          • Hosting a BizKids Market or KidTalks event? Open registration for your next program during<\/em> the event.<\/p><\/li>

                          • Parents can see the value live, ask questions, and commit while the excitement is fresh and they see the value.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>
