High Five!!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You made that look so easy!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You were perfect! I\u2019m so proud<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You did it! You\u2019re so smart!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look at you! You\u2019re a natural!<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the surface, these positive praises seem completely fine to use to congratulate children on their achievements \u2013 you&#8217;ve likely used them yourself!\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these all have one common problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use <a href=\"http:\/\/qpj.051.myftpupload.com\/growth-mindset-vs-fixed-mindset-how-they-shape-identities-in-kids\">fixed mindset language<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h5><b>Why is it a problem?<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These seemingly harmless compliments may end up causing more harm than good in the long run. The intentions behind using them are surely good ones. After all, you want your students to feel proud, but there are harmful side effects that may have never crossed your mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After hearing these types of praises over and over again, children begin to feel like their talents and abilities are limited to the meanings and implications of these praises.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child labeled a &#8220;natural&#8221; may feel like they can\u2019t show that they\u2019re trying, and be reluctant to put in too much effort or practice for fear they will lose their status as \u201cbeing a natural\u201d. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A child labeled the &#8220;best&#8221;, \u201cperfect\u201d or a high achiever may feel overly discouraged and disappointed when they don&#8217;t outperform their peers. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it is shown that the students most likely to cheat on exams are actually the \u201cA\u201d students, not the B\u2019s, C\u2019s and D\u2019s as one might think. This is due to the pressure they put on themselves to be the best or risk losing the love and pride they are given from parents, teachers and peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h5><b>How can I praise children?\u00a0<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean that you shouldn\u2019t celebrate their accomplishments! The key is in knowing WHAT to praise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to developing a child\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/qpj.051.myftpupload.com\/growth-mindset-vs-fixed-mindset-how-they-shape-identities-in-kids\">growth mindset<\/a> and avoiding possible fixed mindset pitfalls are to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Praise Their Effort\/Approach, Not The Outcomes<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than using the types of compliments mentioned above, try to\u00a0 identify WHAT positive actions they are doing that is helping them achieve their positive results. Plant seeds that can grow in their mind that no matter what outcomes from their last attempt, they can always get better and can achieve whatever they want to achieve.
